Last week I posted HOW MUCH EXERCISE AND HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN? This week I’m hoping to motivate you to sit less and keep moving! Studies are showing that even if you are achieving the recommended amount of daily activity if you spend the rest of your day sitting your risk of metabolic problems can increase.
Humans are built to stand upright. Our heart, cardiovascular system, and digestive system work more effectively this way. In addition our our booty, legs, hips and back need movement. Long periods of sitting can have a negative impact on our posture, stability, spine health, & joints! Click here to learn more about the “sitting disease” and why we must address it.
Here are some tips to get you up and down from your work desk.
Place your trash can or recycle bin away from your desk.
Set an alarm on your computer, phone, watch, etc. that reminds you to stand up every 20-30 minutes (this would be a great opportunity to grab a glass of water or do 10 jumping jacks).
Get a standing desk! They are adjustable and can allow you to work in a standing or seated position. Click Here for a link to amazon that includes all kinds of standing desk options. This small change in your workday can increase your metabolism as well as overall health. If you have a boss- request it! Check w/ your doctor and perhaps it can be prescribed.
If you are on a phone conversation stand up while your talking.
Request standing meetings at work.
Have more Face-to-Face conversations whenever possible. Ditch the email or phone call and walk to your co-workers desk for a question.
Stand up for yourself at work and make an effort to sit less! This can be life changing and YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT!
